Persepolis

Be Kind Rewind was actually my first trip to the theater in quite some time. The last film I had seen is one I meant to post about for some time -- the adaptation of Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis.

In a backwards way, it speaks to the strength of the film that my only complaints register with how the two books were adapted. While both installments of the story as graphic novels are great, combining them for one film felt rushed. It's one of those instances where I wish I saw the film first, then was able to dive into the deeper work.

Of course, given the amount of work animators put into a feature-length film, it's not surprising that this adaptation feels rushed. When I say "rushed," though, I speak only of the story -- the animation itself is gorgeous. Satrapi's characters have never looked better, and the film produces images as striking as those found in the book.

Coinciding with the release of the film, both volumes of Persepolis have been collected into one book. I recommend it, as well as the film -- assuming you can still find it in theaters anywhere.
